Modbus to PROFINET Gateways
Connecting Modbus Field Devices to PROFINET IO Controller Systems
PROFINET is the industrial Ethernet standard for Siemens
S7-1200 and S7-1500 PLCs and increasingly the default
network for new factory automation projects across
manufacturing, automotive, food and beverage, and process
industries. Modbus RTU, ASCII, and TCP remain the
standard for field instruments, sensors, drives, and
meters that predate PROFINET or were never designed to
support it natively.
When a PROFINET IO controller needs to integrate Modbus
field devices, a Modbus to PROFINET gateway is the
correct solution. The gateway presents itself to the
PROFINET IO controller as a standard PROFINET IO device,
while on the other side it actively polls or responds to
Modbus RTU, ASCII, or TCP devices translating register
data into PROFINET cyclic IO data that the PLC reads
and writes like any other IO module.
GSDML Files and PLC Configuration
PROFINET integration requires a GSDML file (General
Station Description Markup Language) to be imported
into the PLC engineering software such as Siemens
TIA Portal before the gateway can be recognized as
a PROFINET IO device. A quality Modbus to PROFINET
gateway exports its GSDML file automatically, based
on the configured Modbus data mapping, which
significantly reduces engineering time during
commissioning. The gateway then maps Modbus holding
registers and coils into PROFINET input and output
data slots that the PLC program can access directly
as process variables.
Typical Use Cases
Modbus to PROFINET gateways are widely deployed in
manufacturing plants running Siemens S7-1200 or
S7-1500 PLCs that need to integrate legacy Modbus
instruments, drives, and meters into PROFINET-based
production lines, in automotive assembly facilities
where Siemens-controlled lines must access data from
Modbus serial field devices across multiple stations,
in process industries upgrading control infrastructure
to PROFINET while retaining existing Modbus RTU
instrumentation in the field, and in greenfield
projects where the PLC platform is Siemens but
field instrumentation is Modbus-based due to cost
or availability.
Engineering Support from Archonwell
Modbus to PROFINET integration requires Modbus
command configuration, GSDML file generation,
TIA Portal device setup, and IO data mapping
verification before the system can go live.
Archonwell's engineering team provides end-to-end
support from gateway selection and Modbus
configuration through to TIA Portal integration,
PROFINET commissioning, and on-site verification
across Thailand.
